DEWATS Approach
DEWATS stands for DEcentralized WAstewater Treatment System.
DEWATS is a proven, affordable and low maintenance wastewater treatment system, which can treat organic wastewater to a level that conforms to international environmental standards.
DEWATS Key Benefits:
- Treats 1 to 1000 m3 of organic wastewater per day, domestic or industrial, reducing pollution by up to 90%
- Low primary investment and minimal operational/main-tenance costs
- Reliable, modular and sustainable design built with local materials
- Minimal land requirements
- No external energy inputs required
- Can produce energy from the optional biogas digester
The four main DEWATS modules have been standardized for efficient implementation and dissemination of the technology. An additional benefit is the optional biogas module. Depending on the wastewater composition the produced biogas can be used as an affordable and ecofriendly energy source.

DEWATS can be individually adapted to different effluent and pollution levels, topographical conditions, and the preferences and capabilities of clients. A power supply is not required if there is enough slope for gravitational flow through the system.
DEWATS has been successfully applied to hospitals, hotels, schools, orphanages, markets, communities and a range of agri-businesses including slaughter houses, bean curd factories, breweries and livestock breeding farms. Local authorities and clients are assisted by ESC-BORDA Cambodia with DEWATS consulting, design, supervision and institutional capacity building services throughout the project lifecycle.
Under BORDA's supervision more than 2,000 DEWATS have been built around the world to date. Further, thousands of employees from the private sector, governments and NGOs have been trained to facilitate the dissemination, implementation and maintenance of DEWATS.
